Promises That Matter

Webster’s Dictionary defines a promise as a binding declaration that gives the person to whom it is made a right to expect or to claim the performance or forbearance of a specified act. We all make promises every day. As a child and now as a young person I have exchanged friendship bracelets with my close friends. Those can be throught of as promises to remain friends. Adults make promises too. A wedding band is a mark of a promise. It is a gift from one to another that promises to love each other for the rest of their lives. We put a lot of faith in those promises. But sadly, these promises are sometimes broken. Divorces happen, friends fall out, but God promises us so many things in the Bible. And yet, sometimes, I find myself putting more trust in earthly promises than the ones written for me by my loving Creator. As we approach our one year anniversary of moving to the Dominican Republic, I would just like to share a few of the promises that I have been claiming since our arrival.

  • Deuteronomy 31: 5,6 And the Lord shall give them up before your face, that ye may do unto them according unto all the commandments which I have commanded you.  Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

  • Psalm 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

  • Psalm 143:10 Teach me to do Your will, For You are my God; Let Your good Spirit lead me on level ground.
