About the Dominican Republic! (Part 1)
Although a popular vacation destination, many people do not know much about the country of the Dominican Republic. And because this is my new home, I would love to tell you more about it. The climate is hot and humid. It is similar to Florida only hotter. There are many fruits and vegetables that grow here including mangos, pineapples, and passionfruit. We live in Santo Domingo, which is the capital of the DR. There are 3,587,000 people living in Santo Domingo, whereas there are 11.23 million people in the whole country. The DR is located on an island in the Caribbean. It shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. If you are looking at a map the Dominican Republic would be the eastern two-thirds of the island. Located on the island are both the highest and lowest point in the Caribbean. The highest point is Mount Pico Duarte, which is named after one of the founding fathers. The lowest point is Lake Enriquillo. This lake is the home to the largest amount of American Crocodiles in the Caribbean. Most of the year Lake Enriquillo is a hypersaline lake. (It is saltier than the ocean.) The Dominican Republic is known for its white sandy beaches, and for a good reason. There are over one thousand miles of coastline here in the DR. I hope you enjoyed learning more about my new home. This is part one so keep a lookout for part two!
